Welcome! We are glad you dropped by our "homesite." Liberty Baptist Church is a church that is interested in you. My name is T.A. Powell, and I am privileged to be the first and only pastor Liberty has ever had. As pastor of Liberty for over 20 years, I would like to extend a personal invitation for you to see what God is doing here in our ministry. Our burden of fulfilling the Great Commission is the basis of each facet of the ministries here. As you search for the church that God has for you, we pray that you will not only find an exciting, growing church, but one that will encourage and feed you spiritually as well. Next, I'd like to tell you a little bit about myself and how I came to Liberty. Usually a preacher doesn't return to his hometown, but the Lord moved me here from just 15 miles away where I graduated from high school (Windsor High School, Windsor, Virginia, Class of 1965) after I had completed my education at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1970 and at Hyles-Anderson College in 1978. I thank God for my wife of 31 years, Betty. She has been by my side, loving me, encouraging me, praying for me, and challenging me. The Lord knew before I did that I would need a special wife. Also, we have three wonderful, grown children with equally wonderful spouses, and just recently, we added two precious grandchildren (only 6 days apart). Our oldest, Tom and his wife, Wendy, serve at our church where he is our youth director. They're "new addition," Julia, was born on April 23, 1999. Our oldest daughter, Beth and her husband, David, serve in our church in the singles ministry where David is the director. They too just had a baby girl, Allison, on April 17, 1999. Our baby girl, Sharon, married Lance Smith, and they are currently serving the Lord in Kentucky where Lance is a Youth Pastor. We sure miss them! Anyway, when you have time, I'd like to tell you more about my grandchildren. (Got a day or two?!!) The goal of my life is to be what God would have me to be, to do what He wants me to do, and to live a life of Praise to Him. The Lord saved me in August, 1970. I had always attended church but had never been saved. I was religious but lost. God, in his mercy, allowed a servant of His to cross my path, David A. Wood. He asked me some very pointed questions concerning my relationship with Jesus Christ. Then, at age 23, I settled that issue, and it changed my life, and it is still changing today. That's why I'm so interested that you too know the Lord as your personal Savior. It doesn't matter what kind of a church background you have, there's only one kind of people that will go to Heaven and that is saved people. Have you ever been saved? I'm 52 years of age, and all I want to do the rest of my life is to serve Jesus, serve people, love Jesus, love people and influence people all over the world to accept Christ and to be a vital part of the Kingdom of God. Will you join me in doing that same thing? May God love you and bless you. T.A. Powell, Pastor, Liberty Baptist Church |
